To learn a foreign
language: Understanding
and speaking a language other than your own is clearly a benefit
in today's shrinking world. In business, being able to understand
the language of key markets, and more importantly gaining a unique
insight into the culture of those key markets, gives a clear
advantage.
Learning Japanese in Britain might teach you Japanese but will
it teach how to do business in Japan? How to use your newly acquired
skills, and in what context? The same is true of any language
in the world.
Even for the private individual, learning to speak another language
is an aspiration that can become an effective reality. And for
the younger generation, speaking more than one language opens
up personal and professional horizons.
A foreign language is not a dead, dry text. Nor is it the disembodied
sounds from a tape machine. The problem with conventional language
tuition is that the context and cultural reference is removed.
In conventional language courses of almost any kind, the student
reverts to his own language when classes have finished. The usually
unavoidable fact is that students speak their own language with
friends and colleagues when not "in class".
This undermines the effectiveness of language tuition. This
weakness is completely eliminated with Home Language International's
method.
For a programme of language tuition to be successful, you must live the
language. Learning as you learnt your own mother tongue. Complete
isolation from your own language is the only sure way to rapid
progress. The student must live and experience the language in
the country where it is spoken.
That formula is the basis of Home Language International's unique
system: originated in 1979 by Ian Josephs, chairman and chief
executive, and proven for more than 20 years. Ian Josephs himself
has more than 40 years' experience in directing language schools
in England, France and Monaco.
